Responding to the need of justice and empowering young people

Sturr began life as a new charity, nonprofit start up early in 2023 with a focus on empowering indigenous young people in a variety of nations, in particular South and South East Asia, but also nations in the continent of Africa.  Involving young people from the get-go by asking them to share their dreams and visions, providing them with opportunities to engage in meaningful service, helping to train them with necessary skills, and fostering leadership and mentorship.

The Sturr Trustees endorse this approach which aims to inspire a lifelong passion for mission and work in the nonprofit sector by equipping and making opportunities available for young people to be active participants in faith-based work in the nations of the world.

Working to overcome injustice

At Sturr we are excited by Our Mission: Bringing people together to overcome injustice.

Our Vision: We see potential outworked; We see dignity restored; We see hope established.

Our Values: We will love across divides; We will seek justice and establish truth; We will stand in courage and dare to be different; We will learn from others.

People regularly ask what Sturr means. As a startup we wanted to portray the meaning of stirring things up! Stirring up is a phrasal verb that gives the impression of agitating, mixing, instigating, being intentional about causing something to happen.

Working with integrity

However, it means more than that, so we have also set out our purpose and meaning through an acrostic in order to bring into focus what it is we stand for:

S – Sustainable. We want to be sustainable. Meeting the needs of others today, without harming their ability to thrive and develop.  Working to complement their own abilities.

T – Trustworthy. To be an organisation that is reliable and can be trusted as honest, transparent and truthful as we form partnerships that live out our objectives.

U – YOU. Is personal and asks a question of you; How will you become involved?

R – Responsible. To be known as an organisation that is accountable for its actions as it seeks to build relationships with individuals and partners, with consistency and dependability in meeting obligations.

R – Resilient. To be known as an organisation that has the ability to adapt in a timely and appropriate manner in the face of challenges.  To thrive in a changing environment.

Why we exist?

Our reason for existing and investing is because of our relationship with Jesus.

We also have a desire to empower and engage with young people who have passion to see justice in the nations.

How we operate?

We involve and engage with young people, asking them to shape their dreams and visions while walking alongside them through the opportunities they create.  Helping to advise and train them with necessary skills, along with fostering leadership and mentorship.

Transparency and integrity are important to us.  As Sturr works with our indigenous partners, wherever possible, we work together to establish and create a Foundation or nonprofit in the receiving country, in order to have a legal framework on which to build.

Where are our partners?

We work primarily with Master for Development Foundation who are based in Vientiane, Laos;

In Pakistan our partners are a new nonprofit startup Global Mercy Foundation in Faisalabad;

In Sri Lanka we are working with a new start up called Tzedakah based in the city of Moratuwa and the surrounding areas; we have also individual partners in Nepal; Jordan; Poland; Vietnam and Mozambique.

What are we doing?

Sturr is actively involved with partners working in areas of justice and empowering people groups in the following areas: Development through teaching, coaching and mentoring; Education and relief to bonded and enslaved workers; Children and families affected by domestic abuse; Sports academy with the focus on rugby; and small sustainable agricultural projects,

Your Support makes transformation possible

Despite many challenges, we are so encouraged by your support. Thankyou to those of you who supported our recent walking challenge; ‘Walking To Create A Sturr’ where we walked 30 miles to raise funds.  We were amazed at the willingness to walk, to organize and to help on the day, by so many of you.

We are pleased to say that we have raised in over £4000 so far.  We are also still open to donations via the Gofundme page.  If you would like to support Sturr and its work financially on an ongoing basis, then please let us know and we can explain the different ways.
