CALLED BY NAME

Don’t worry if not, here’s a quick summary:
It’s based on the true story of a man who brings laughter and compassion into the lives of people who are sick, showing they matter.
It’s a beautiful film well worth a watch but there’s a particular scene that has always sticks with me.
Patch is a medical student, standing with other students as they watch a doctor examine an elderly woman in the hospital.
The doctor treats her like a case study, listing her problems and asking the students, “What’s wrong with her?”
The woman looks scared and exposed, she wants to hide away under the blanket as they point out her sickness, as if she’s just a list of symptoms to be fixed.
You can see the fear on her face. The doctor eventually goes ‘Before we move on any questions?’
Then, from the back, Patch quietly speaks up: “What’s her name?”
The doctor, confused, asks him to repeat it. Patch says again, “What’s her name?”
The doctor finally asks her, and she quietly replies, “Margery.”
Patch smiles at her and says her name. She smiles back, and in that moment, the fear on her face melts away. She feels seen.

I love this scene because it reminds me of Jesus.
Jesus calls us by name. He doesn’t start with our flaws or failures. He sees us, knows us, and longs for us deeply.
“The shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” (John 10:3)
He knows your story, your struggles, your hopes, and your heart. You are not just one in a crowd or a problem to be solved. Your life matters to Him.
When Jesus called people by name, like Mary at the tomb (John 20:16), it brought comfort, closeness, and an invitation into new life.

The world may label us in many ways, but when Jesus calls your name, it reminds you that you are His, loved, and chosen. As we connect with others our neighbours, strangers, friends, or someone far away let’s remember this: we are deeply known by Him, and others long to be seen too.

And there’s something else: The name of Jesus itself holds power. In His name, there is healing, peace, and hope. When we call on the name of Jesus, we remember that He is with us, for us, and working even in the unseen.

So today, remember:

You are seen.
You are known.
You are loved.
By name.
And His name, Jesus, is hope for us all.
